Railway Safety in Estonia -

          16

          - Annual Report 2011

The Estonian Railway Culture Foundation (ERKSA) was

founded by the former private shareholders of Estonian

Railways with the purpose of continuing supporting

railway related projects also after the shares of the

company were sold back to the Estonian Government.

          The

mission of the foundation is developing and promoting

Estonian railway culture and heritage by preserving

railway history and supporting railway safety and railway

          employees.

As ensuring safety is of paramount importance in case

of rail transport, ERKSA has paid particular attention

to OLE’s projects. During our first year of activities we

supported OLE’s initiative to equip the prefectures

of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board with

presentation equipment kits that would help police

officers who have passed OLE’s training to spread

the railway safety messages in Estonian schools,

kindergartens and other institutions and save lives.

In 2009 we supported OLE’s project for acquiring a tent

for trade fairs and digital drawing boards. These tools

help the members of the organisation and volunteers to

communicate railway safety message in various public

          events.

We are particularly satisfied with our cooperation project

from 2010 in course of which OLE provided signal vests

to 3,330 kindergarten children living in the proximity of

railways. The sooner one starts to care about health and

safety, the more probable it is that the learnt knowledge

will become a useful habit helping to live long and happy.

It is perfectly clear for us that the

efficiency of OLE’s work depends on

          its ability to produce high-quality

advertising and training materials, as all

          good knowledge and experience deserves

to be well-communicated. Therefore, we welcomed last

year OLE’s initiative to acquire state-of-the-art audio

and video equipment that would allow producing all

necessary materials “in house” instead of outsourcing

them from service providers. This way OLE can save

money and use the funds for other projects.

By the time of publishing this annual report, ERKSA has

invested all its funds into railway related projects and

folded up its activities. We sincerely hope that during

these five years we have helped to launch or revive

several railway related projects. We are extremely glad

to see the success of OLE over the recent years and with

We are extremely glad to see the success of OLE over

the recent years and with the organisation good will

and courage in continuing its efforts.
