Railway Safety in Estonia -

          23

          - Annual Report 2011

The main outlet of our railway safety promotion work

has bee the nation-wide project “Protect yourself and

Help Others” (KEAT) that is targeted at 6-graders from

local schools. In 2011 we had also an exiting cooperation

experience with Tallinn Arte High School where railway

safety presentations were made throughout a day to the

          entire school.

Two years ago we started a joint project with the

Estonian Ministry of Defence for introducing safe traffic

rules to young recruits. Whilst discussing railway safety it

appears that almost each young soldier has been walking

on railway tracks and not only in spare time but also

while in military service. During military hikes a path that

is easy to walk is chosen and often it happens to be a

railway line. To date, we have made presentations to 640

recruits of Harju County who are now aware about the

dangers present on railway and are able to inform about

them also their fellow recruits. We are certain that this

project is worth continuing also in 2012.

In cooperation with OLE and OLEREX petrol stations we

started in the end of 2011 a new preventive traffic safety

project called “Let’s Save Lives” where we inform motor

vehicle drivers about their responsibilities both at railway

crossings and in traffic in general.

In the Northern Prefecture railway safety promotion work

is in the hands of the officers of the Regional Prevention

          Service:

Liina Soodla, Marina Aleksejeva and Kristel-Liis

            Kaunismaa.

“Our cooperation with OLE has been excellent and we hope

that this positive experience will continue in the years to

            come.”
