Railway Safety in Estonia -

          12

          - Annual Report 2011

In 2011 Edelaraudtee organised several works improving

traffic safety. The most important project was the renewal

of the Türi-Viljandi railway line. The works were done in

order to ensure traffic safety on the section and improve

            the comfort level of travelling.

          During the repairs our

company replaced the entire track superstructure with

gravel, sleepers and rails. The project lasted for almost 8

months during which time we renovated 52 kilometres of

track and all railway level crossings, installing additional

automatic light signals. In addition, we renovated all six

passenger platform located between Türi and Viljandi,

equipping them with tactile surfaces for visually impaired

passengers and ramps for passengers using wheelchairs.

I am pleased to note that the Türi-Viljandi railway line

reconstruction project was considered by the locals to

be so important that it was nominated as one of the

candidates for the “Deed of the Year” award of Järva

          County.

          Additionally, Edelaraudtee reconstructed level crossings

in Rapla and Männiku. The latter was a particular concern

from traffic safety’s point of view - the crossing with two

roads was rebuilt into a safer crossing with one road.

The reconstruction improved significantly visibility at

the level crossing and we installed additional signalling

equipment in Männiku. In Rapla our company renovated

the coating of a level crossing.

In order to organise train traffic more

          efficiently, Edelaraudtee improved its

          day-to-day information communication

system. The GPS systems installed on

trains enable real-time monitoring of traffic timetables

and communicating information about train delays at the

          website

          gsm.edel.ee

In the year 2012 the company intends to continue the

development of its IT systems for making train traffic

smoother. We are planning to install information monitors

in stations and provide on-line information about

train movements on our website. Our infrastructure

reconstruction efforts will be focused on the renovation

of Türi-Lelle railway section where we will replace

deformed rails, replace some of sleepers, add ballast and

In the year 2012 the company intends to continue

the development of its IT systems for making train

            traffic smoother.
