© Operation Lifesaver is a international, non-profit education and awareness program dedicated to ending
tragic collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights of way.
Founded in Estonia on 19 November 2004 -
On July 28-29, 2012 the Järva-Jaani Fire Fighting
Society organised a vintage equipment exhibition
during which a safety installation was opened in
the Järva-Jaani Vintage Equipment Shelter.
We
simulated a serious traffic accident at railway level
crossing that involved the collision of a freight train,
passenger car and truck, the latter two of which
caught fire. Another passenger car approaching at
high speed jammed into a lamppost located at the
level crossing. The third passenger car approaching
could not stop and hit the truck standing on its
way. Then we called the 112 emergency number
and the demonstrative activities of the various
rescue agencies started at the accident site. We
set two cars in fire and showed how are executed
rescue operations and fire fighting. We also cut one
passenger car involved in the accident into pieces
and showed how people are rescued from a vehicle
that has suffered serious damage. The experts
from various rescue agencies commented all these
activities. The simulated railway level crossing set
up at the site of installation was used for explaining
potential threats and ways how to prevent them.
We also exhibited some display stands with safety
information.
The safety installation will be open for a longer
period. The visitors of our museum will have the
chance to get safety information both independently
and in groups, with the help of our guide. We inform
our visitors about the need to pay particular attention
in traffic, need for using safety equipment properly
and right behaviour in case of accidents – calling
rescue services, actions taken at the site of accident,
showing way, etc. As our installation is staged at a
simulated railway level crossing then we can also
explain people the dangers related to railways. The
groups of visitors have been extremely satisfied
with our new installation and we have received a lot
of positive feedback. We are convinced that we have
done the right thing, as the installation underlines
the importance of good cooperation between rescue
agencies and contributes to promoting safety.
“We are very grateful to Operation Lifesaver Estonia for
their good will, helpfulness and material contribution!”
