Operation Lifesaver Estonia Annual Report 2012
requirements – 120 km/h for passenger trains and
80 km/h for freight trains. The modernised railway
infrastructure allows safer driving as well as lower
vibration and noise levels.
In 2013 the company continues enhancing
passenger safety and renovates passenger platforms
in Kardina, Rakvere, Kabala, Kiviõli, Kohtla, Jõhvi,
Oru, Vaivara and Narva station. The works will be
completed by November 2013.
The plans for 2013 also include renovating
approximately 30 km of railway track and, where
necessary, repair the coating layer of railway level
crossings located on these sections.
In 2013 will continue the renovation of catenary in
the area west of Tallinn in order to make sure that
the technical condition of the power supply system
allows servicing the faster trains. The catenary
is designed to accommodate trains driving on
main line tracks up to 160 km/h, guaranteeing the
reliability and safety of the network.
The fast development of technical conditions that
allows increasing considerably train diving speed,
improve the capacity of the infrastructure and
offer additional comfort for train passengers also
cause additional dangers for those using railways.
Therefore, increasing people’s awareness about
safety becomes more and more important. Shaping
the right traffic behaviour of the general public is a
long process that succeeds through continuous and
clear communication of messages.
In addition to the application of technological
measures for enhancing safety like construction of
new platforms, modernising pedestrian and road-
railway crossings and improving visibility at existing
crossings, AS Eesti Raudtee has been since 2004
cooperating with OLE for promoting railway safety.
OLE’s regular campaigns involve cooperation with
volunteers, local governments and law enforcement
agencies for nation-wide promotion of railway
safety.
In 2013 our major challenge is to help our
passengers to adapt to the increased train driving
speeds and more frequent connections that demand
more from all of those involved in traffic.
