Railway Safety in Estonia -
24
- Annual Report 2011
Southern Prefecture
We have been dealing with railway safety in the territory
of the Southern Prefecture already for years
due to the
unawareness of people about the dangers present on
railways and ways how to prevent them.
In order to reduce the number of railway accidents, our
officers dealing with youth have been organising already
for two years a prevention project called “A Train is Always
on Priority Road”. The project aims at teaching the youth
how to behave on railways and railway crossings. If in
2010 the project involved youth from Valga County and
Tartu then in 2011 we added to the project young people
from Jõgeva and Põlva counties. The children took part
in interesting lectures on railway safety and participated
in a creativity contest. In the end of the series of events
the best participants were thanked and awarded in the
Estonian Road Museum located in Põlva County. In 2011
the project had 463 participating pupils! The feedback we
received from participants was very positive and they all
agreed that such lectures are necessary.
In September 2011 the employees of the Southern
prefecture and their children took part in a training day
taking them to the Tartu-Koidula railway line. During
the event we got acquainted with the train route from
Tartu to Orava and visited the brand new Koidula railway
border station. During the train trip, an interactive railway
safety presentation was made in the coaches, introducing
the rules of correct behaviour in railway area and at level
crossings.
In addition to the project “A Train is Always on Priority
Road” the Southern Prefecture produced in the end of
the year 2011 a training film with an instruction for use
and two crosswords for different age groups. The film
was staged on May 27, 2011 in Jõgeva County and it was
based on a real accident involving a train and a bicycle.
We would like to thank Edelaraudtee for helping us in
producing the film.
In Southern Prefecture railway safety is in the hands of
Maris Orgusaar,
Senior Inspector of Criminal Bureau, and
Marina Paddar
, Head of the Prevention Service.
“Our cooperation with OLE has been excellent. OLE has
trained our police officers dealing with youth and supported
our railway safety projects and events. We believe that
our smooth and reciprocally supportive cooperation will
continue.”
