Railway Safety in Estonia -

- Annual Report 2011
We at Operation Lifesaver look back on 2011 with a sense
of achievement, even as we recognize that the road ahead
may lead to considerable changes for the organization.
The mission of Operation Lifesaver remains the beacon
that unites our work: Saving lives and reducing injuries at
highway-rail crossings and on or around railroad property.
A personal highlight of 2011 for me was travelling to
Tallinn in March to speak at the
“Let’s Save Lives 2011”
conference hosted by Estonia OL. I was honoured to meet
with safety advocates from Europe and other countries
to share our passion and ideas for improving safety. Later
in the year, OLE Board Chairman Tamo Vahemets and
OLE Youth Manager Birgit Vahemets came to the U.S. and
completed an OLI trainer course.
In April, I testified before a Congressional committee
about Operation Lifesaver’s efforts to reduce train-vehicle
and train-pedestrian incidents. Also in April, 41 Operation
Lifesaver state program leaders participated in our
biennial Summit in Portland, Oregon.
Four Operation Lifesaver regional workshops were held
between June and September, with a total of 365 people
attending. The events were held in California, Kentucky,
Maine and Wisconsin. Workshop speakers and attendees
shared best practices in rail safety education and enjoyed
networking opportunities.
Social media continued to help
disseminate the rail safety message. The
Operation Lifesaver Twitter page doubled
its followers and OL’s Facebook page
fans increased by more than 40%. Please

Operation Lifesaver launched its ProDriver Challenge
e-Learning program (

drivers in June. With the interactive, web-based learning
tool, users navigate on-the-road scenarios and learn how
to safely navigate railway crossings.
Using the Internet to target the 18-34 year-old audience,
Operation Lifesaver’s Bad Move trespass prevention
campaign launched in October. The campaign included an

As Operation Lifesaver celebrates its 40th
anniversary in 2012, we stand tall because of the
tremendous work that has been achieved over four
decades.
