Railway Safety in Estonia -
44
- Annual Report 2011
In 2009 OLE launched with its European partners the European Level
Crossing Awareness Day (ELCAD) in course of which we informed people
about dangers at level crossings and ways for avoiding such dangers.
The project was a huge success. In 2010 the participating European countries
were joined by other countries of the world, turning ELCAD into ILCAD
(International Level Crossing Awareness Day). The project involved the road
transport sector, government institutions, railway companies, rail infrastructure
managers, the police and non-profit organisations dealing with railway safety
from more than 45 countries. The project was also joined by such European
and global railway organisations as CER, EIM, UIC, Operation Lifesaver, The
European Railway Safety Council, the European Level Crossing Forum and the
European Railway Agency. In addition to the organisations already mentioned, the
campaign was joined also by the Transport Division of UN’s European Economic
Committee, Latin American Railway Association (ALAF) and Australian-Asian
Railway Association (ARA).
The educational campaign organised by UIC in 2011 was participated by companies
and organisations from more than 40 countries. Again, the campaign was a success
and its key event was the ILCAD press conference held in Poland. The work and
opinions of the “OLE family” were represented by Birgit Vahemets.
